Abstract

The Taiwanese Smartphone industry's shipment volume arrived at approximately 38.5 million units and the industry's shipment value stood at around US$9.9 billion in the third quarter of 2011. It is estimated that the industry's third-quarter shipment volume and value have grown about 8.0% and 7.3%, respectively, in comparison to the second quarter of 2011. Owing to market anticipation of a new iPhone product in the third quarter and postponed product release of iPhone 4S (assembled and contract manufactured by Foxconn and Pegatron) to the fourth quarter, iPhone 4 shipment dropped as a result. Even though the iPhone 4S orders were later placed, owing to the delayed product launch, no large-scale iPhone shipments were recorded and the industry witnessed limited shipment growth of iPhone products in the third quarter of 2011. Samsung is one of Taiwanese branded vendor HTC's main rival. Since Samsung's Galaxy S II continued to enjoy strong sales in the second quarter of 2011, shipment performance of HTC was affected. Generally speaking, HTC scored moderate shipment growth in the third quarter of 2011.
